Study Trip

As the number of participants for the Study Trip is limited, tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.
Please note that the study trip can be canceled if less than 10 participants register.

After two exciting days filled with presentations, discussions and networking take part in our study trip on Thursday, 28 April 2022.

Program

This excursion will take us to the Dispatch Center of Central Térmica da Vitória and the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The island’s power company Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira (EEM) will give us insights into its power system.

The Dispatch Center at Central Térmica da Vitória, incorporates the control of both small and isolated grids of Madeira and Porto Santo islands, with the main mission of ensuring the continuity and safety of electricity supply to EEM´s consumers.  Therefore, has coordination and management of the power generation (both conventional and renewable), and developed an innovative generation forecast tool that enables an outstanding optimization of renewable energy integration. The dispatch center controls both transmission and distribution network.

At the distribution level the grid management system provides instantaneous views into utility operations that enable real-time monitoring of circuit loading and system performance. The outage management systems make it possible to deploy crews to remedy outages even before customers call to report their power is out.

BESS – Madeira’s Energy Storage System with Batteries fits in the regional strategy of maximizing the usage of renewable energy sources, improving the efficiency of the electric generating system and reducing CO2 emissions. This system aims to complement the electric generating system of the Madeira Island, using lithium-ion technology batteries and advanced power electronics, capable of contributing with active power and usable capacity of 18MW/15.6MWh, which will allow the optimization of thermopower plant and the integration of more “green” energy, thus increasing the share of renewable energies in the regional production mix.
